Reduced Ice Thickness

Existing Conditions

The goal of the refrigeration equipment is to maintain the required ice surface temperature and hardness.  Because ice is an excellent insulator, the thicker it is, the harder the refrigeration plant has to work to maintain the required surface temperature.  Greater ice thickness also reduces the ability of the refrigeration control system to react to changing loads (such as flooding).

Retrofit Conditions

We recommend that the ice surface be reduced to between 3/4” and 1”.  We also recommend that the thickness be monitored on a weekly basis.
