Automatic Boiler Blowdown Control

Existing Conditions

The boiler system removes boiler water impurities through a continuous blow down system.  The operator adjusts the rate of blow down based on the results of intermittent water tests.   Blow down water is rejected to building drainage system.  The heat contained in the blow down water is lost.

Retrofit Conditions

The system has the capability of measuring the concentration of impurities in the boiler water by measuring conductivity.  A control valve on the blowdown line will regulate the flow of water removed from the system based on the conductivity measurement of the boiler water.  This will minimize the energy lost through blowdown.

Analysis

Start with an estimate of blowdown water volume.  Determine the heat lost through blowdown, and work from there.
