Benchmarking is the comparison of this building against a database of similar buildings. The graph compares eight end-use categories (space heating, space cooling, ventilation, water heating, lighting, refrigeration, plug load, and "other") for this building against three database sets created by ASHRAE and the US Department of Energy.
The three database sets are:

| • | Similar climatic zone |
| • | Similar building size |
All comparisons are normalized to a common unit of conditioned floor area (square foot or square metre). A common energy unit (equivalent kilowatt-hour or ekWh) is used to compile fuel sources into a single value.
