Existing Conditions

The boiler circulating pumps operate continuously in the heating season, regardless of whether the boiler is firing.  Hot water in the boilers radiates heat from the heat exchanger and up the flue, creating significant standby losses.  Modern building and energy codes specifically prohibit this situation in new buildings.

Retrofit Conditions

controls on the boiler circulating pumps.  The pump starters would be connected to the building automation system to be turned on and off with the boiler.  The pumps should be programmed with a delayed stop (two to five minutes after the boiler stops).
